Sustainable start-up projects

Ruhr University Bochum offers those interested in founding a company a unique starting point to advance their own project.

At Ruhr University, we promote the transfer of sustainable knowledge into practice. Almost every one of our start-ups at the Worldfactory pays towards at least one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Support for people interested in founding a company at the Ruhr-Universität

  • The WORLDFACTORY Start-up Center (WSC) promotes start-ups from the university. Five incubators of the WSC offer subject-specific expertise and start-up support: Start4Chem for the fields of chemistry and biochemistry, SmartSystems for the development and implementation of smart systems, Materials for materials science, Cube5 in the field of cyber security, and Health+ supports start-ups in healthcare, life science and medical technology.
  • FACE@RUB stands for Female Academic Entrepreneurs and is the incubator for female founders at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. FACE aims to inspire female students and young academics to pursue their own start-up ideas and deal with entrepreneurship.
  • The RUB-Makerspace is an open teaching and experimentation space. Here, interested people can implement their ideas. A whole range of machines and devices are available for this purpose.
  • Maker in Residence: Once a year, a Maker is to be invited to the RUB Makerspace for a period of up to ten weeks. The Makers share their technical or creative knowledge with the groups in the Makerspace.
  • The Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transformation (CEIT) was established by the Faculty of Economics. The aim is to transfer projects based on economic science into practice and to support people interested in founding a company from the fields of business administration and economics.
  • With the Business Model Design Lab (BMDL), the Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovative Business Models offers students the opportunity to design a business model in collaboration with a regional start-up or a planned RUB spin-off.
  • The university program „Innovative Praxisprojekte“ focuses on transfer and practice in the form of challenges.
  • Once a year, „Entrepreneurial Idea Competition“ takes place. The competition is located at the Faculty of Economics and takes place in cooperation with Santander Bank. Creative solutions for social challenges are sought.
  • The UFO-Kontaktstelle supports practice- or start-up-oriented teaching/learning formats as well as independent student project teams.
  • Enactus: Here, students are committed to making the earth a better place in the long term through innovative projects and social start-ups.
  • Various continuing education programs and certificate courses offer students and employees the opportunity to expand their skills: The Akademie der Ruhr-Universität offers, for example, the modular training program "Entrepreneurship and Start-ups".
  • The university support program „Proof it!“ enables students interested in founding a company to further develop and implement their business models.
  • The QUBO Innovationsaward honors special achievements in the field of transfer and entrepreneurship.

Sustainability research in corporate practice

The Ruhr-Universität creates optimal conditions for scientific findings from sustainability research to be disseminated and put to good use. It promotes the rapid translation of research results into application and welcomes close cooperation with industry on sustainability topics.

Science and Society: Offers for Citizens

Ruhr University sees itself as a strong player in interaction with the city and the region in order to shape the future sustainably together. It contributes its scientific findings on sustainability to dialogs and debates in order to promote a differentiated formation of opinion and to support informed decisions. In doing so, it attaches importance to transparency and seeks dialog with the public.
